A passionate team
The Forest Bakehouse was started in 2013 by an initial group of people that were passionate about bringing real, nutritious bread to the local community. After much hard work and commitment, in 2016 The Forest Bakehouse was named Best Producer in the Taste of Gloucestershire Award and today is a busy, thriving business. This year we won Best Independent Retailer in the Forest of Dean Business Awards and were finalists as Cafe of the Year in the So Glos Awards and Best Customers Service in the Cotswold Food Awards. Our team and cafe keep expanding to serve our increasing number of loyal customers and we're incredibly proud to be an important community hub.
A SPECIAL THANKS
As a community cooperative bakery, we feel privileged to have had the financial support from local individuals who invested in the enterprise from the beginning and continue to support us as customers and friends. Their investment coupled with European funding secured from the Local Action Group made it possible for us to establish and develop, and for this we are super grateful!
We are also supported in our purpose by The Real Bread Campaign, an international initiative finding and sharing ways to make bread better for us, better for our communities and better for the planet.
OUR FAB TEAM
The Forest Bakehouse was born from Sue's frustration at not being able to buy real bread free from chemicals for her family. 7 years of hard work later and here we all are, pretty chuffed that Sue didn't give up when the going got tough.
Chris joined the team a few years ago and put her dexterous florist's hands into action laminating pastry, making croissants and shaping baguettes. A pastry wiz, she also keeps the cafe looking mighty fine with greenery often from her garden.
Queen of the Kingdom of Cakes, Rahel whips up and whacks out unbelievably delicious cakes and tarts before most of Longhope wakes up. She joined the team as a pastry chef a few years ago and is now a master baker to boot.
Without doubt the most glamorous baker around, Katie joined us as an apprentice over a year ago and often now heads up the bake single-handedly, facing Chris' wrath if her croissants haven't been proved and baked to perfection!
With a background in fine dining, Liz has upgraded the bakery and cafe with her exceptional culinary skills and super duper organising ideas. She's turning her hand to dough now and has begun to single-handedly woman the bake.
Mother Hen and baking all-rounder, not only does Penny have a superb sense of humour, she also makes producing a delicious staff lunch everyday a top priority. Favourite part of the job? "Shaping dough feels like playing with kittens."
With a toothy grin to greet you when you enter the Bakehouse (most the time), Gemma came on board last year to focus on front of house and make sure the service is as awesome as the bread we bake. She's also the Bakehouse's marketing guru and website pro!
Gemma's front of house sidekick, not only did Beth win first prize in a beauty competition with a cabbage, she's brilliant fun to have around the bakery and isn't shy about sharing her thoughts on plastic bags with the customers. All in all, an excellent egg.
We've been hosting our very popular summer pizza evening for several years that brings the community together over delicious food and this year saw us cater for over 125 people. We also host occasional charity supper events and are looking to run some fermentation workshops. Keep an eye on the noticeboard inside the cafe to hear about any events we have coming up.
